• As you may already know, September 9 is International FASD Awareness Day. There are events happening on September 9^th and  throughout the whole month of September. We have sent materials out to many communities this year. Thank you all for your work and good luck with your events. If your event is happening later in the month, feel free to contact us for materials.
• Once again, the Annual FASD Awareness Walk in Saskatoon will be hosted by MACSI. They look forward to gaining support from the community and always offer up a fabulous lunch. A poster with details is attached.
• Parents, just for you is our 5th Annual Parent Retreat. The retreat will be held in Regina November 4^th to 5^th, 2011. This year’s theme, Bloom Where You Are Planted, promises chances for growth and acceptance. Connecting with others at the retreat and learning from keynote presenter Diane Malbin will help parents to bloom and learn in a friendly, safe and nurturing place. Please see the registration form link, located after the information for full event details. This event is offered at no cost to participants and is coming up very quickly. It is a good idea to register soon! If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Network office. If you know of a parent who might not receive this notice please share the information.

FASD Family Support Program News!!

Parent Support Meetings and Know and Grow Sessions

The Network is pleased to begin to offer direct services to families living with FASD through the new Family Support Program. The program aims to work with families and circles of support in Saskatoon and Area to gain positive outcomes for those living with FASD. A program brochure link is listed below the information. The FASD Family Support Program will begin to offer monthly Parent Support meetings in Saskatoon and “Know and Grow” sessions throughout the province. These sessions are for parents living with FASD. This includes birth parents, foster parents, caregivers, adoptive parents and grandparents.

The monthly Parent Support Meetings will be held at the SHAW CENTER 122 Bowlt Crescent in Saskatoon. All meetings will run from 7:00 pm- 8:30pm. Snacks and beverages will be provided! Mark your calendars with the dates of the first three meetings. Please give the FASD Network a call before attending. Call 975-0881 or 975-0885.

For parents and caregivers living throughout the province, the FASD Network will hold “Know and Grow” sessions. These sessions are a great opportunity for gaining knowledge and networking. The following communities will host a  “Know and Grow” session in the coming months: Prince Albert, Nipawin, La Ronge, Meadow Lake, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Regina, Yorkton, North Battleford and Weyburn.

 About the Presenter: 

Dr. Larry Brendtro is founder of the Circle of Courage Institute, Dean of the Starr Commonwealth Institute for Training, and former president of Starr Commonwealth serving troubled youth in Michigan and Ohio. 

 Dr. Brendtro is editor of the journal  Reclaiming Children and Youth and with colleagues has authored twelve books and 200 articles on challenging youth. 

This workshop will cover two approaches for reclaiming children and youth: 

1. Deep Brain Learning:  Pathways to Potential for Challenging Youth  

• Dr. Brendtro taps into the growing body of  research drawn from diverse disciplines to identify powerful universal principles for success with challenging children and youth

 This session is based on his most recent book- Deep Brain Learning: Pathways to Potential for

Challenging Youth.  

2. Response Ability Pathways [RAP] 

• Developed in South Africa during the administration of Nelson Mandela; this universal training is now being delivered by a network of trainers in 13 nations  
• RAP puts the Circle of Courage model into practice so that young persons can take pathways to responsibility.  
• RAP draws from emerging  research about resilience, the brain, and positive psychology.  
• RAP teaches practical strategies to connect with challenging youth, clarify problems, and restore bonds of respect.
